His goal was to use the product on his vegetables but to also study the results carefully via an experiment with his sweet potato crop.

Results on Sweet Potato

Dalton inoculated the soil at a rate of 2 tablespoons per gallon prior to planting. About six weeks into the season, he started to have some disease issues and the vegetative growth stopped. He applied Holganix Bio 800+ Agriculture heavily to the soil at 8 ounces per gallon for two consecutive days. “Within a week, I had no more disease issues and really had no damage as it seemed to have repaired the disease wilt that had occurred,” explains Dalton.

After the recovery, the crop “produced so heavily, vegetatively, that I had to prune a few days a week because the growth was explosive,” says Dalton. “The crop gave me bountiful weekly harvests of leafy greens for my livestock, as well as producing a harvest of sweet potatoes yielding over one pound per square foot.”

“I didn’t have a control group,” admits Dalton. “But I did recently look at a sweet potato experiment at a nearby University that implemented standard farming techniques and conventional fertilizer.” According to Dalton, “There was a significant difference in yield. By using Holganix Bio 800+ Agriculture, we produced about 2-3 more sweet potatoes per square foot compared to the University-led experiment.”

Results on Vegetable Gardens

Dalton also used Holganix Bio 800+ Agriculture in his garden beds. He reported that “Holganix Bio 800+ Agriculture really breaks down the organic matter.” Dalton implements a deep mulching method. “The soil microbes within Holganix Bio 800+ Agriculture help speed up the process of breaking down the organic matter.”

Aside from a breakdown in organic matter, “I also saw a reduction in fertilizer. For larger areas, Holganix Bio 800+ Agriculture decreased the need for fertilizer but in the garden beds, I was able to eliminate fertilizer. I could just use Holganix Bio 800+ Agriculture and still have thriving plants with a bountiful harvest.”

For his vegetable gardens, Dalton applied Holganix Bio 800+ Agriculture at 8 ounces per gallon in three applications. The first was during soil prep where he inoculated the soil prior to planting, the second was via foliar application halfway through the growing stage and the third was applied during the fruiting stage.

Why Should Your Farm Use Holganix Bio 800+ Agriculture?

It all comes down to soil health and investing in the legacy of your family's farm. And, when something didn’t work, to judge the cause of the problem.

Did you have an agronomic or a production/training-related challenge?

As you look at the best and worst results from the previous years, distinguish if those results were route-specific or application specific. If they were route-specific, that may point to a training problem over an agronomic problem but could also mean that the homes on that route have poor soil (this is especially true for new subdivisions).

Did a weather event affect results?

Did a specific product hurt, or help results?

Did you conduct soil tests? If so, what do those tests say about the soil and your current program?

Consider that bad results can even be a result of a previous application.

Pull a cancel report from your sales CRM. Was there a specific route or time of year when cancels were higher than usual? This may point to an agronomic or training problem.

For additional information on how to analyze your previous years’ results, watch the video from 3:00 – 25:00.

Fertilizer

When looking at nutrients, plan out your total target for nutrient levels. This includes nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients. Liquid fertilizers will allow you to tune up or tune down the pounds of nutrients you are applying to suit weather events, while granular fertilizer is less flexible.

Regardless of the pounds of a particular nutrient, make sure you are also considering your nutrient sources. For example, nitrogen isn’t just nitrogen. Depending on the source of nitrogen you are applying, you can expect a different agronomic result. Urea nitrogen is quick releasing and gives you a quick green-up. In contrast, slow-release nitrogen like Methylated Urea or Triazone, will give you a slow, mid, and quick release, ultimately extending the green results for a longer period.

For additional information on fertilizer, watch the video from 25:00 – 34:00.

Weed Control

When it comes to controlling weeds, project the timing of that weed control by weeks or months, not by application round. This is because soil temperatures may drastically change from the start of an application round to the end of a round, and as a result, you may need to tailor your weed control applications to provide the best agronomic result. With current technology, liquid weed controls will always work better than granular controls.

For additional information on weed control, watch the video from 34:00 – 41:00.

Soil Components

Soil pH levels and Cation Exchange Capacity are two soil components to consider when you are building a program.

Soil pH measures the acidity or alkalinity of the soil on a scale from 0 to 14. It’s an important chemical property because it affects the availability of nutrients to the plant and the activity of soil microbes.

There are practices contractors can accidentally do – such as adding too much fertilizer – that can affect the pH – ultimately, creating a downward spiral that makes the soil less efficient and requires more and more fertilizer to correct. When soil pH indicates too much acidity, then you need to add lime and when soil pH is too alkaline, then you need to add sulfur. Soil microbes will also help bring your pH level into balance.

Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) is the ability of the soil to hold or store nutrients for the plant. The higher the CEC, the greater the soil’s ability to store and feed the plant. To increase CEC, adding a product with high microbial populations will stimulate the digestion of organic matter, increasing humus levels, and thereby increasing CEC levels. To measure the CEC levels in your soils, look at using more advanced soil tests.

For additional information on soil components, watch the video from 41:00 – 46:00.

Seasonal Pressures

When building a fertilizer program, seasonal pressure is one that takes lawn care companies by surprise each year. But there are three things we can consider to be proactive.

Disease – When you face disease, don’t just consider what type of disease you are facing also, consider what caused that disease. Was it caused by the weather? An over-application of nitrogen? Or something else entirely? We want to ensure we are treating the cause and the symptom of the disease.

Weeds – Which weed control are you using and when? Remember soil temperatures play a big role in weed germination.

Drought – Have an alternate drought plan in place so when the weather begins to look drought-like, you and your team are already prepared.

For additional information on seasonal pressures, watch the video from 46:00 – 49:00.

Application

There are three things we can consider when it comes to conducting applications:

Liquid vs. granular – Depending on the time of the year and the weather, you may want to use granular over liquid. But also consider that liquid fertilizers and weed controls provide greater flexibility to respond to weather events.

What equipment are you using – For example, pulling a hose may provide a straighter line than using a spray machine but is more labor intensive and it is possible that results may drop off later in the day as technicians tire.

What is your spray volume – Products like weed control and biological inputs like Holganix Bio 800+ will often work better when applied at a higher spray volume.

For additional information on applications, watch the video from 49:00 – 52:00.

Budget

Before you build your program, understand what your budget needs to be. And, when looking at the budget, consider two methods of measurement:

What does your cost per 1,000 square feet need to be?

Your cost of goods (COGS) should be about 20-25% of your revenues. If you are a brand-new company, you may have a higher COGS.

Aside from inputs and labor includes another cost to consider is the cost-of-service calls. Often, it’s cheaper for lawn care companies to pay for superior products and superior training than to pay for service calls later in the season.

For additional information on budgeting, watch the video from 52:00 – 58:00.

Schedule Time with Your Holganix Expert

Looking to sit down with your Holganix representative and build a program that works for your company and region? We couldn’t have done it without you!

Our Origin Story

In the summer, Holganix CEO Barrett Ersek would spend his weekends fishing for striped bass on the Chesapeake Bay. Each year there were more and more conversations about the effects fertilizers were having on the fish population and marine life in the Chesapeake. At the time, Barrett was running HappyLawn, a regional lawn care provider that serviced the area surrounding the Chesapeake Bay. Homeowners (HappyLawn’s customers) began to ask questions, Was HappyLawn’s Service Chesapeake Bay Safe?

Those questions inspired Barrett to begin looking for answers. How could fertilizer users grow healthy plants, turf, and crops using fewer fertilizers and pesticides?

In 2010, Holganix LLC was born. Centered around our pioneering microbial product Bio 800+, Holganix harnesses the power of over 800 soil microbes to boost plant and soil health.

For lawn care companies and golf courses, Holganix Bio 800+ provides a solution to reduce the need for fertilizers and pesticides, without sacrificing agronomic results. For farmers, Holganix Bio 800+ Agriculture increases fertilizer uptake by the plant, builds dense root systems, and ultimately increases crop yield, all while charging soils with the soil microbes they need to be productive.

Our mission is to revolutionize the way the world grows. To help us track that revolution, we created our Greater Green Goal. We pledge to eliminate 100 million pounds of nitrates, 25 million pounds of phosphates, and 100 million ounces of concentrated pesticides from entering the universe by Earth Day 2025.

Fertilizers are an integral part of how the green industry delivers results and feeds the world. By championing our Greater Green Goal we are seeking to deliver agronomic tools that allow fertilizer users to increase nutrient uptake and reduce their reliance on fertilizers.

Greater Green Goal: Where are we now?

Today, Holganix products are used by over 1,000 lawn care companies, dozens of top-tier golf courses and professional sports arenas, and hundreds of thousands of farmland acres.

To date, Holganix has eliminated 37,332,960 pounds of nitrates, 9,333,240 pounds of phosphates, and 34,999,650 ounces of concentrated pesticides.

“We are about 37% of the way to reaching our goal,” explains Barrett. “We have a journey to reach our goal, but we are bullish on our ability to achieve it.”

How Does Holganix Bio 800+ Reduce or Optimize Fertilizer and Pesticide Use?

Depending on the plant type, with each gallon of Holganix Bio 800+ used, we eliminate about 18 pounds of nitrates, 4 pounds of phosphates, and 17 ounces of concentrated pesticides.

Holganix Bio 800+ charges soils with microbes that help the plant:

Grow stronger roots that can better mine for nutrients

Increase nutrient availability by making nitrogen-fixing bacteria and phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria more readily available

Building long-term soil health so that the soil can better capture and store nutrients - this is thanks to microbes that keep nutrients in the root zone longer, where plants can better access them

Boosting plant resilience so that the plant can better handle stress caused by weather, disease, traffic, and more

Check out the Holganix Data

We have dedicated our company to the understanding of soil science and have developed the Bio 800+ product line to ensure your soil is everything healthy soils were designed to be, teeming with diverse life that promotes plant performance.

The Holganix Research and Development Team consists of scientists with over 97 years of experience in agriculture and agronomy. Without healthy soils, farmers wouldn’t be able to provide us with feed, fiber, food, and fuel.

Just like how a foundation for a home is critical, healthy soils act as a foundation for plants by supporting plant roots and keeping plants upright for growth.

Soils act as a pantry for plants, storing and cycling essential nutrients and minerals that plants need to grow.

Soils store water for plants. In fact, according to the USDA, “every 1% increase in organic matter results in as much as 25,000 gallons of available soil water per acre.” That’s a lot of water!

Soils maintain adequate aeration for plants, providing oxygen for microbes, insects and plant roots.

Soils are habitats for beneficial soil microbes; these organisms are nature’s hidden helpers. They form synergistic relationships with plants to protect them from stress and provide them with nutrients, among other tasks. According to the USDA, “one teaspoon of healthy soil contains, 100 million-to-1 billion individual bacteria alone.”

Soils are homes for many other organisms like insects that lay and hatch eggs in the soil.

Soils filter surface water of dust, chemicals, and other contaminants. This is why underground water is some of the cleanest sources of water. In fact, according to Soils.Org, “through natural processes, such as soil absorption, chemical filtration, and nutrient cycle, the Catskill Watershed provides New York City with clean water at a cost of $1-to-1.5 billion, much less than the $6-to-8 billion one-time cost of constructing a water filtration plant.”

Healthy soils help protect the planet from climate change. According to Columbia University’s Earth Institute, “soils remove about 25 percent of the world’s fossil fuel emissions each year."

Healthy soils provide farmers with better crop yields and protect plants from stress.

When it comes to human health, almost all of the antibiotics we take to help fight infection were obtained by soil microbes.

Healthy soils protect the land from erosion.

Soil is a nonrenewable natural resource. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), it can take hundreds to thousands of years to form a centimeter of soil. As recently as 1940, a single American farmer could feed 19 people per a year." Today, one American farmer feeds 166 people per year. That's more than ever before!

Plus, where would our American classics be without the American farmer? That puts agriculture’s contribution to the overall economy at about 6%. According to one study, members of the food and agriculture industries, and their employees, pay about $900 million in taxes, helping to support their communities and our nation.

Plus, agriculture employs about 25 million Americans. That is approximately 17% of the U.S. workforce.

Thank you for keeping our economy moving!

Thank you for Protecting our Environment!

Did you know that about 25% of emissions have been captured by Earth’s forests, farms, and grasslands? American farmers are increasing their ability to capture emissions by improving the health of their soils.

Practices such as cover crops, no-till farming, regenerative farming, and other soil health-promoting practices continue to gain in popularity. According to data from the Agricultural Resources Management Survey, 21% of American growers producing corn, cotton, soybeans, and wheat use either no-till farming or strip-till farming every year. Additionally, 51% of growers used one of these practices at least once over a 4-year period.

In addition to helping capture emissions, farmers also protect our wildlife. We’ve spent dozens if not hundreds of blog articles talking about how leveraging the right consortium of beneficial soil microbes can lead to big agronomic payoffs - whether you are a lawn care company owner looking to reduce the use of your fertilizer, a farmer looking for a higher ROI on their crops, or a golf course superintendent looking to increase playability - soil microbes hold the key.

But, in honor of Halloween, we decided to mix things up. Instead of talking about all the beneficial soil microbes, today we are going to talk about 7 spooky soil microbes. The kind that causes big agronomic damage, and keeps green industry professionals like yourselves up at night.

And before you ask, no these microbes aren’t in any Holganix products. ;)

1. Predatory Nematodes

A vampire of the soil microbe world, predatory nematodes feast on plant roots, causing stunted growth and yield loss. In addition, punctures from predatory nematodes can allow diseases to enter the roots, furthering plant health problems.

A deadly predator, nematodes are estimated to cause $80 billion in crop yield loss a year. If that doesn’t make you quake in your boots - I don’t know what will.

When predatory nematodes run rampant, farmers and turf professionals are forced to use harsh, expensive nematicides to literally fumigate the soils or sacrifice their crop to the infestation.

But not all nematodes are evil. About half of the nematode species are beneficial or benign.

Treating nematodes without the harsh, expensive fumigates? Holganix has a technology currently under development that has shown promise with nematode reduction by up to 80% on certain species both in the lab and in the field.

>>Learn more about our nematode data here

2. Phytophthora

Phytophthora literally means The Plant Destroyer in Greek. This bad guy was the infective agent of the potato blight that caused the Irish Potato Famine in 1845. It’s unclear how many people died from the famine, although the number is well into the millions.

Today, The Plant Destroyer is still the most destructive pathogen of certain crop types including potato, tomato, and many ornamental species.

Difficult to treat chemically, most farmers rely on plant resistant varieties in order to combat Phytophthora.

3. Photorhabus Luminescens

While the Photorhabus Luminescens doesn’t target plants, it deserves a spot of honor on this spooky microbe list.

A nematode sidekick, photorhabdus luminescens glows neon green and lives in the gut of Entomopathogenic nematodes. When a nematode infects an insect, this microbe is released, killing the insect and converting it into nutrients so the nematode can reproduce. When the nematode and photorhabdus luminescens are finished with their prey, new nematodes burst from their victim to hunt down additional insects.

4. Bacillus Anthracis

This deadly microbe causes anthrax poisoning in animals and humans. The disease can be deadly - causing skin, lung and bowel disease. Bacillus Anthracis is so deadly, it has been harnessed as a biological weapon by several countries.

A survivor, Bacillus Anthracis is highly resilient and capable of surviving harsh chemical treatments and temperature extremes.

5. Fusarium

Fusarium packs a big economic punch - causing damages in food and ornamental crops. Fusarium species can cause well known (and well feared) diseases such as Fusarium Stem Canker, Fusarium Solani (root rot), and Fusarium Oxysporum (Wilt).

Not only does it attack crops, but it produces mycotoxins that can be harmful to people and animals. In fact, it has been used as a biological weapon commonly dubbed “Yellow Rain”.

But, not all fusarium are evil. Many species are perfectly harmless.

They are often difficult to control because of their ability to survive in the soil for long periods of time even without a host. To battle, this fiend, take note of symptoms characteristic of early-stage disease and harness biological or chemical practices when you see an infection start to take root. Cultural practices like crop rotation can also help minimize its effect.

6. Myxococcus Xanthus

Myxococcus Xanthus travel in swarms known as a “wolf pack”. They hunt other microbes, swarming over the microbes and consuming everything its path. They paralyze the unlikely victim and slurp it up.

While not pathogenic in nature - Myxococcus Xanthus and their wolf pack-like hunting policy is spooky enough for our list!

7. Agrobacterium Tumefaciens

The Frankenstein of the microbe world - Agrobacterium Tumefaciens is a plant pathogenic bacterium that is known as Nature's Genetic Engineer. Agrobacterium Tumefaciens inserts its T-DNA into the host plant causing the plant to create tumors. Ultimately the infection creates what is known as Crown Gall Disease.

Specifically, this bacteria targets dicots such as tomatoes, roses, and walnuts.

Microbial Super Heroes

Are one of these spooktacular microbes keeping you up at night? Beneficial soil microbes are nature’s superheroes that naturally combat villains like those listed above. Nematodes feed on plant roots, damage them, and drain nutrients from the plant, thereby decreasing yields and increasing the plant’s susceptibility to other stresses.

Worldwide, parasitic nematodes cause an estimated 10 billion dollars of crop loss each year in the United States and 100 billion dollars globally.

Considering the more subtle effects of low infestation levels, the 100-billion-dollar approximation may be a vast underestimate. Indirect losses are caused by nematodes creating wounds in plant roots that result in an entry way for infection from plant parasitic fungi, archaea, and bacteria. An effect of global warming is the increase of warmer soils, thus providing a more favorable environment for species previously not endemic to certain areas, and causing increased nematode losses globally.

In the turf industry, golf greens provide an ideal environment for nematodes. This provides a huge opportunity since, according to a paper by the University of Arizona, “The economic impact of the golf course industry is significant, estimated in 2005 to have an annual value of $195 billion.” Greens are an ideal environment because they provide the plant parasitic nematodes with a uniform host with a long growing season. Per the University of Massachusetts, “The soil is 75% to 95% sand which provides ideal pore spaces for oxygen, water, and nematode mobility, and the greens are watered frequently. Nematodes are aquatic animals and need moisture for mobility. Golf greens can have some of the highest populations of nematodes found in agricultural soils.”

One difficulty in assessing nematode impact is that damage resulting from nematode infection is often less obvious than that caused by many other pests or diseases. Losses that result from nematode attack may not necessarily be a consequence of direct cell death, necrosis, or ‘diseased’ tissue, but may derive from other more insidious aspects, such as interference with the root system, reducing efficiency in terms of access and uptake of nutrients and water. To the unaware, nematode-affected plants present typically drought and nutrient stress symptoms, which are easily and often misdiagnosed.

Want to learn more about Holganix's Preliminary Nematode Results?

While studies are still ongoing, preliminary results have shown 75% reduction in pathogenic nematodes with Holganix's bionematicide technology in a lab setting, and an 80% reduction in pathogenic nematodes in a field setting.
