The Science Behind Holganix

Entry 20: New Innovations in the Lawn Care World

Today’s lawn care industry is innovating like crazy in order to keep up with volatile fertilizer prices and strict legislature. It’s an exciting time to be in the industry and new scientific insights are allowing us to save money and make grass greener. With this influx of innovation comes a set of brand new terms, representing some of the awesome new scientific findings that have entered the market. But what do they mean? And how can they help save you money?

Bio nutrition- Bio nutrition is anything that’s going to feed the biology in and around the soil. Utilizing bio nutrition isn’t necessarily about feeding the lawn. Instead, bio nutrition focuses on feeding the ecosystem around the lawn. This ecosystem then helps the lawn utilize fertilizers more effectively. Essentially, utilizing bio nutrition means dropping the rate of needed fertilizers and saving you big money in a slow moving economy. You can also think of bio nutrition in terms of your body: eating well, exercising and getting enough rest.

Bio stimulant- Bio stimulants are things that help improve the efficiency of the plant to better use traditional inputs such as fertilizers. An example of a bio stimulant is humates. Humates improve the cat ion exchange and uptake of fertilizer. Bio stimulants are another technology that help you decrease the needed fertilizer and save you money.

Biological meta-catalyst- A biological meta-catalyst enables plants to more efficiently uptake nutrients. Significantly lower quantities of synthetic fertilizers are needed to obtain the results previously only available through the use of traditional turf fertilization products. Because healthy plants are more able to resist disease and insect damage, using Holganix can result in decreases in the use of herbicides and pesticides. And best of all: fewer nitrates, phosphates, and other chemicals are released into the environment.

IPM: Integrated Pest Management- The idea of IPM isn’t necessarily new to the industry. However, the idea of practicing an IPM approach has never been more popular than it is today. IPM means that you aren’t just spraying pesticides at random. Instead, it’s about spraying the weed as an individual or spot treating an area where nasty insects are more prevalent. As lawn care specialists, we can understand how to be more cost and time effective by limiting pesticide usage through IPM or biological meta-catalysts.

At the end of the day, what it all comes down to is economics, agronomics and sustainability. It’s about utilizing practices that are best for our businesses and our wallets while maintaining or improving the results of our services. Today’s innovations have paved a new way for the lawn care industry to work, a way in which we cannot only survive in a slow moving economy, but thrive!
