There are so many fertilizer products out there that it’s hard to weave and dodge through the mayhem to find what we are looking for. No matter what product name we use, it all comes down to two types of nitrogen fertilizer:

1.  Quick releasing (Urea)
2.  Slow releasing (i.e. Methylene Urea)

As lawn care professionals, we want what’s best to get that end result: green grass. But what are nitrogen fertilizers and what exactly are they supposed to do for the lawn? Let dive into each type of nitrogen fertilizer. 

Quick Release Fertilizer

The biggest benefit to implementing quick or fast releasing nitrogen fertilizers is the fact that you get green results, quick! Fast releasing fertilizers provide nitrogen to the plant in a form that is immediately available. And, when it comes to running a lawn care company, those quick results make for happy customers. 

The big draw-back on quick release fertilizer is that the result is often short lived. The nitrogen can also leach into our waterways and burn the turf when used in excess or during hot summer months. Quick release fertilizers also drive turf growth - fast - and that can cause the turf to become weak or stressed. 

Slow Release Fertilizer

On the other hand, using slow releasing nitrogen fertilizer means waiting a little bit longer for those great results. They release the nitrogen gradually to the plant, which ensures maximum uptake of the nitrogen by the plant. By utilizing slow releasing nitrogen fertilizers, the chance of leaching, burning and excessive turf growth is decreased dramatically.
