Thomas Jefferson once stated, “Cultivators of the earth [Farmers] are the most valuable citizens. They are the most vigorous, the most independent, and the most wedded to its liberty and interests, by the most lasting bonds.” Jefferson considered farmers to be the backbone of a healthy society, valuing their hard work and contribution to the nation's economy. As we approach Thanksgiving, our team is reflecting on the incredible role farmers play in sustaining life and nourishing communities. In honor of this holiday, we've put together an infographic outlining eight reasons to be thankful for farmers. From strengthening our economy to protecting the environment, their contributions are vital. Scroll down for the full story and discover how farmers shape our world.

thank you For Proudly Serving Us Three Times a Day!
U.S. President Ronald Reagan once remarked, "Amazement" is the word for how most of the rest of the world views American agriculture. We grow more grain, we plant more soybeans, we raise more cattle and export more produce than any combination of countries in the world. American agriculture is one of the great success stories of our time. As recently as 1940, a single American farmer could feed 19 people for a year.” Today, that number has skyrocketed, with one American farmer feeding 166 people annually—an all-time high!
Consider this: where would our beloved American classics be without the dedication of our farmers? An acre of Kansas wheat can produce enough bread to feed 9,000 people daily. One steer yields approximately 720 hamburgers, and 60% of Idaho’s potatoes are transformed into french fries and other fried delights.
In short, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to farmers for nourishing us three times a day!
Thank you For Strengthening our Economy!
In 2023, agriculture and other related industries contributed $1.53 trillion to the U.S. GDP, representing around 5.3% of the total economy. A recent study found that individuals in the food and agriculture sectors, along with their employees, contribute about $900 million in taxes, which helps support both local communities and the nation as a whole.
Moreover, agriculture provides jobs for about 22.1 million Americans, making up roughly 10.4% of the U.S. workforce.
Thank you for helping to drive our economy forward!
Thank You For protecting our environment!
Did you know that Earth’s forests, farms, and grasslands have captured about 25% of emissions? American farmers are enhancing their capacity to sequester emissions by improving soil health.
Practices such as cover cropping, no-till farming, regenerative agriculture, and other soil health-promoting methods are becoming increasingly popular. According to the Agricultural Resources Management Survey, 21% of American growers of corn, cotton, soybeans, and wheat utilize either no-till or strip-till farming annually. Furthermore, 51% of growers have employed one of these practices at least once over a four-year period.
In addition to capturing emissions, farmers also play a vital role in protecting wildlife. For instance, North Dakota ranked first in the U.S. for honey production in 2023 for the 19th consecutive year, with nearly 511,000 bee colonies producing 38.3 million pounds of honey valued at over $67.8 million. Additionally, farmers and ranchers in Wyoming provide winter habitats for 75% of the state's wildlife.
Thank you for being excellent stewards of the land!
