Science Behind Holganix: What happened to the green? Rain may be a culprit

The Science Behind Holganix

What Happened to the Green? Rain May Be a Culprit.

Organic Green Lawn

Rain and watering may help produce healthy green turf and plants, but excessive moisture can also harm color and produce pale turf. The heavy rainfall the northeast has been experiencing is creating serious problems for the turf in terms of color. Holganix certainly helps in the process of creating the perfect green lawn but under the extreme conditions Mother Nature has been throwing at us, Holganix isn’t a cure-all solution. Boosting nitrogen levels may be important under the environmental conditions of today.

A little extra nitrogen can be just the ticket to receiving optimal results. Holganix scientists recommend increasing nitrogen levels to 3/8 – 1/2 pounds of nitrogen with your usual rate of Holganix. Keep in mind that many other companies are increasing nitrogen levels in the area to be proactive with weather conditions. For example, some national companies have already applied as much as 2.75 pounds of nitrogen this season in order to compensate for excessive moisture levels.

However, there are other reasons why you may be seeing less than optimal green coloring. Turf type and mowing practices can both lead to pale lawns. With excessive growth it becomes difficult for mowers to keep up and they may be correcting this by mowing low to the earth. However, if you cut a large part of the leaf blade off you have cut a large part of the plant that has color resulting in a pale appearance. Furthermore, as certain grasses go to seed such as bluegrass and rye, the color gets blurred. Bluegrass looks white when it’s at seed head and the rye becomes very stalky when it produces seed. That means there is little green leafy tissue present and causes the color to look less than satisfactory.  Don’t forget to keep disease in mind as a possible culprit, to learn more about disease during the rainy season see this blog post.
